Before the Ball Drops: Choosing Light When the Weight Feels Heavy

Today is Day 3 of Before the Ball Drops, where we pause together to choose light even when emotional weight feels heavy, honoring hope, faith, and self-care as we prepare our hearts to step forward into a new year.

Depression is heavier still. It can drain color from life and make even simple moments feel distant. Depression often lies to us about our worth and our purpose. It can convince us that nothing will change and that hope is unrealistic. Yet Lamentations 3:22–23 tells us that mercy is renewed daily. That means even on days when energy is low and motivation feels absent, grace is still present.

This season is not about pretending everything is fine before the calendar changes. It’s about honesty. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us there is a time for everything—a time to weep, a time to heal, a time to rebuild. Reflection before a new year isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom.

One of the most loving things we can do for ourselves is to pause and ask, “What emotional weight am I holding that no longer serves me?” Not every burden belongs in the next chapter. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that peace is connected to trust, not control. Releasing emotional heaviness creates room for clarity, rest, and renewal.

Prayer plays a powerful role here. Prayer is not about having perfect words. It’s about showing up honestly. God meets us in truth, not performance. When we speak openly about our sadness, anxiety, and depression, we invite God into places we may have tried to manage alone. Psalm 55:22 encourages us to cast our cares on the Lord, trusting that He will sustain us.

Take some time to watch today’s video and do some self-reflection.
