New Year, New Goals, Same You, Same Low-Level Activity: How Is That Going to Work Out for You?

As the calendar has turned to a new year, many of us feel a surge of hope and anticipation. It’s a fresh start, a blank page, a chance to set new goals and embrace new possibilities. But here’s the question: How do we ensure that this year isn’t just another cycle of setting lofty goals and then slipping back into old habits? How do we make this year different?

Reflecting on the Past

Before we rush into new resolutions, let’s take a moment to reflect. Think about the goals you’ve set in previous years. How many did you achieve? How many faded into the background as life took over? It’s okay if not all your goals were met. The important thing is to learn from those experiences and use them to fuel our growth.

The Power of Intentionality

Setting goals is more than just writing down what we want to achieve. It’s about being intentional. It’s about aligning our desires with God’s purpose for our lives. When we set goals that resonate with our faith and values, we’re more likely to stay committed and see them through.

Biblical Wisdom on Setting and Achieving Goals

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” — Philippians 4:13 (NIV)

These scriptures remind us that when we commit our plans to God and rely on His strength, we can achieve great things.

Action Steps to Reach Our Goals

Set SMART Goals

Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve.
Measurable: Determine how you’ll measure success.
Achievable: Ensure the goal is realistic.
Relevant: Align the goal with your values and purpose.
Time-bound: Set a deadline to create urgency.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” a SMART goal would be, “I will exercise for 30 minutes, five times a week, for the next three months.”

Create an Action Plan

Break down each goal into actionable steps. Determine what resources you need, who can support you, and what obstacles might arise. Having a clear plan increases the likelihood of success.
